Fast Therapy – Cost Effective Too

Dear Doctor Mom, in your busy life wouldn’t you like to take a break for a few days? Your stomach might be thinking that very same thing. Fasting is a way to allow our body functions to take a break, something like a vacation. And that can do a body good. (Cheap therapy, too.)

That fasting has health benefits is not widely known. No, not only can it help in weight loss; it can help in the improvement of the total function of the entire body system. It may sound unbelievable but fasting could even cure diseases such as colds, fever, cough and other stomach disorders. Some religious sects regard fasting as holy, a sacrifice, voluntary abstinence for religious reasons. But there is more to fasting than the religious aspect. It was discovered years ago that it could help improve a person’s health.

For colds, people normally resort to medicine. “Take something for it”, is the usual attitude at the first sign of such ailments (as with fever and coughs). However, there is an alternate to cure those illnesses and that is through fasting – at the advisable duration of three days.

As treatment for colds and coughs, try not eating anything for three days. But take all the water you can take until your pulse and body temperature returns to normal. Take a good long rest in bed and after three days, you will feel like you’ve never been sick. A less drastic alternative is to take only fresh made juices from fruit and vegetables and also water during the fasting days.

To others, it may sound suicidal to go on a fast when you are already sick. Some may argue that you need to gain more nourishment when you’re sick to recover easily. But the real deal there is that a sick person is not really able to digest food well. So there is no worry that the sick person would become malnourished in the duration of the fasting. In fact it is an advisable process to prevent more stomach indigestions. Since a sick person could not digest food very well, there is a big chance of acquiring stomach disorders.

The digestive system, just like any overworked motor, needs to rest to prevent overheating. Oftentimes, stomach disorders are mainly caused by overworked digestive system – basically due to improper eating habits such as eating too fast and not chewing your food sufficiently. Remember that your stomach doesn’t have teeth so if you feed it with half-chewed food the digestive system becomes overstressed as it has to work harder to digest the food.

Fasting is also a good cleansing process for your digestive system. It can prevent dyspepsia and would also help the liver function well. The beneficial effect of fasting is that it gives the stomach needed rest from any digestive disorders. Just do not forget to eat lightly after the three-day fast; don’t splurge on food immediately. This will prepare your stomach to a full meal without distressing the digestive system. Eat soft foods in moderation.

Dear Dr. Mom, Any form of heartburn is an unpleasant experience, to say the least.
The splashing up of stomach acid into the esophagus and throat can be
quite painful and potentially dangerous.  In extreme cases, where the
esophagus is continually damaged by the reflux of stomach fluids, a
condition called Barrett’s Esophagus can develop.  This condition is a
precursor to esophageal cancer. Millions of people suffer from the symptoms of heartburn every day.  Those with acute cases of heartburn may have a condition called acid reflux or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Barrett’s Esophagus occurs when chronic acid reflux or esophagitis is not controlled. Through constant inflammation and damage, the normal cells that line the esophagus called squamous cells turn into specialized columnar cells.  Columnar cells are not normally found in human beings and can become cancerous.

The physical cause of heartburn is the improper functioning of the LES (lower esophageal sphincter).  This ringed muscle at the bottom of the esophagus, relaxes in order to allow food to enter the stomach.  This muscle then retracts in order to keep the digestive fluids where they belong.  It is when this muscle is too relaxed or damaged, that the stomach fluids can escape up into the esophagus thereby causing acid reflux.

There are many possible causes of acid reflux.  The foods that we eat play an important role.  Food that is too acidic can aggravate this ailment.  Not chewing food properly, eating meals that are too large and lying down within three hours of eating can all contribute to acid reflux.

Certain foods and beverages can cause the LES to become lazy.  These culprits include smoking, drinking alcohol and prescription drugs.  Raw onions and garlic, fried foods, chocolate and foods that are too spicy can also cause the LES to relax.

There are two ways to treat this condition.  They are the allopathic medical and the holistic approaches to disease.

The allopathic medical way

  • is to prescribe certain drugs such as H2 receptor antagonists, which include Tagamet and Zantac, or PPI drugs (proton pump inhibitors) like Nexium and Prilosec.  These medicines slow down the production of stomach acid and are the two main types of pharmaceutical acid suppressors.
  • This pharmaceutical approach is dangerous in that it impedes the proper digestion and assimilation of food.
  • There are also numerous harmful side effects associated with these drugs.  Drugs only treat the symptoms of a disease or condition.  They are not intended to cure.  If the drug companies created drugs that cured they would soon go out of business.

The alternative way to treat acid reflux is holistically.

  • Holistic by definition means considering a whole thing or being to be more than a collection of parts;
  • Treating the whole person rather than just the Symptoms of a disease.
  • Using alternative remedies, which are natural and have no side effects, is certainly the safest and most effective approach.
  • These treatments are also far less expensive than drugs.
  • Holistic treatment, unlike drugs, can actually cure the condition or disease.

In order to develop acid reflux, we must first have an acidic system.  By treating the whole body and alkalizing the system, acid reflux will disappear.  What we eat and drink determines the PH of the body.

Vegetable juices, like raw potato, celery and cabbage are very alkaline in nature and are helpful in correcting an acidic stomach.  Papaya juice contains the digestive enzyme papain, which has a soothing effect on the stomach and aids in the breaking down of protein.

Slippery Elm, Bladderwrack and Marshmallow, belong to a category of herbs called demulcents. These herbs aid digestion by decreasing inflammation and by soothing the affected areas. They form a protective barrier against stomach acid and other digestive irritants.

There are many holistic ways to treat acid reflux.

  • Meditation can be of great help.  Start by doing deep breathing exercises for ten minutes.  Keeping the eyes closed, visualize you stomach, LES, esophagus and throat as young, pink, tender and perfect.  Continue to breath and picture yourself in perfect glowing health.  See yourself eating slowly in a relaxed atmosphere, enjoying your food.  Picture the food being digested and assimilated in a perfect manner.  Feel all the parts of your body working in perfect harmony together.
  • Yoga can also be very beneficial to the body as a whole.  Loosing weight and regular exercise are important as well.  Drinking copious amount of pure water not only flushes the system of toxins, but dilutes stomach acid during periods between meals.

The holistic approach to healing is the medicine of the future.  We can all be a part of that future now.

When your body’s acid level rises too high, your thyroid function will be depressed and your metabolism will slow.

Lack of digestive enzymes, also caused by over-consumption of processed foods, further causes your thyroid disorder. Your body’s ability to neutralize acids is further reduced. As you get older, the more toxins you’re exposed to, the more likely you will develop a thyroid disorder if you haven’t already.

THE DAMAGE

With a thyroid disorder, your body’s cells and organs will not metabolize as quickly as they should. The presence of excess acid only makes the problem worse. Your cells and organs will become overrun with acid that they need to eliminate, but your thyroid disorder will reduce their ability to deal with these acids. The acid, in turn, will perpetuate or worsen your thyroid disorder.

For example, a sluggish thyroid reinforces the digestive problems that cause acid to accumulate in your body. Because a thyroid disorder slows your cellular metabolism, it reduces your body’s ability to eliminate acid waste. The more acid-forming substances you consume, the more this cycle repeats.

As with other organs, the thyroid needs glucose and oxygen to function. When acid waste accumulates in the bloodstream, these vital substances cannot get through. Or you may be considering alternative medicine for your arthritis, because you have been treated unsuccessfully for years by conventional medicine.

Organic fresh made juices have cleansing and laxative action, which will help you eliminate constipation. Taken regularly they will help you have daily bowel movements.

Organic juices contain loads of mineral, bioflavonoids, vitamins, enzymes, antioxidants, and other nutrients. Citric fruits have citric acid and the more tart they are the more acid they have.

Fresh juice is a fast way to get all types of nutrients into the blood quickly. As juice nutrients get into your blood, they suck out toxics and build up tissues. In your colon they destroy bad bacteria, feed wall tissue, pull out toxins, and have laxative action.

Even though juices provide helpful action throughout the body, it is best to limit their use and drink them in larger quantities only when trying to accomplish certain health benefits.

If you use natural foods with laxative effects, their laxative effect diminishes after long-term use.

If you have diabetes or adrenal fatigue, limit your use of fruits and juices when you first wake up in the morning. However, exercise in the morning will help you tolerate drinking some juices in the morning

When juicing fruits and vegetables, the more fiber that is left with the juice the better results you will get with your constipation.

It is always best to use fresh juices, but as a last resort using frozen juices will be better than not drinking anything.

Apples and Apple Juice

Apples are good for eliminating constipation because they are high in pectin, a soluble fiber, have many minerals, and contain sorbitol – a natural sugar, which stimulates peristaltic action. Pectin helps to detoxify the intestines and promote regular bowel movements.

The fiber in apples adds weight and bulk to your fecal matter and helps draw water from your colon into the fecal matter keeping the stool from becoming hard and thus preventing constipation.

Apples are one of best fruits to eat because they are high in minerals, which provide alkaline electrolytes to your body. What electrolytes do is neutralize acids that are created during illness, anxiety, anger, exercising, breathing pollution, and improper eating. Body acid is a major reason we get deadly diseases as we age

Make eating apples or drinking fresh apple juice a daily habit. They are also effective in liver and gallbladder problems. .

Here’s what to do.

Use crisp and hard apples such as granny smith, Fuji, or gala apples for juicing.

Drink three glass of apple juice during the day – morning, noon, and evening. In combination with drinking fresh apple juice, eat 3-4 apples each day to get fiber. The combination of eating and drinking apple juice will activate your colon to start moving stagnant matter.

One-day apple and apple juice fast

You can also do a one-day or two-day apple and apple juice fast by, eating 3-4 apples during the day. Drink apples juice every two hours. Don’t eat anything until the next morning. Then, start changing your eating habits as listed in some of my other articles.

When we consider brain function and brain health I think I can speak with the authority of experience. When I was 8 years old I had Polio. The Polio I had is called; ‘bulbar polio’, [polio of the brain]. This polio affected my general mental function, causing ADHD type symptoms as well as chronic fatigue, squinting of one eye, slight paralysis of the muscles in my neck and right lung. The paralysis improved after a few months, being especially visible in my eye improvement.

BUT as I reached my late 30’s I found symptoms recurring, especially with ataxia, [interrupted messages from the brain to the muscles causing weakness], in my neck, and my right lung was basically not functioning when I slept.

This problem has got worse with age, and as I found out this is common with Polio victims and is called, ‘Post-Polio Sequel’. Because of these problems I have had to find every trick in the book to keep healthy and alive.

From my early 20’s I have been studying the brain and ways to improve its function through; DIET, SUPPLEMENTS, EXERCISE.

In my early 40’s I went all out studying brain injury with related problems, especially pertaining to short term memory damage, ADHD, and Autism, and have basically never stopped in my quest to understand this traumatic disability.

The information I gleaned strengthened my belief that neurological function and cell structure in general could be altered or improved by, DIET, SUPPLEMENTS, EXERCISE. BUT it seems just as I start to get one problem in control, another symptom raises its ugly head.

According to the Post Polio Sequel Support Group’, this is the case with all the old polio victims; they either try every trick in the book, or die early.

TO GET TO THE POINT

I think of ENERGY this way; if I was rushed to hospital now, the guys of the emergency services would give me a drip, glucose and saline, and as I have seen happen, it’s almost like the paramedic gives me new life. So subsequently I “drip” some energy into myself – in my morning green tea I have; 1 teaspoon SOLE` made from Himalayan Salt and a bit of lemon for the Vitamin C, and I also have pure fruit juice for the sugar. [my morning drip]

About a year ago I however felt I needed more, possibly protein or a ‘good fat’, but without eating a meal and getting even fatter, so I thought I would try coconut oil. [Obviously only the very best quality]. [I use Extra Virgin]. I now realize that coconut oil in my morning tea helped with energy I so desperately needed with the added benefit of feeding up my brain.

It took me a long time arguing with myself trying assure myself – “was this only in my head”, to actually realize and accept that the coconut oil in my tea not only helped the ataxia in my neck, [head shaking], but it also helped my right lung to breathe better at night. I was blown away and being busy, I had no time to check the internet for backup results. I told whoever would listen about my findings, but now feel I am obligated, as a result of the article I have just read in the Saturday Newspaper, to share this knowledge.

Here is the article I read; ‘Hope stirs for dementia man’. The article tells of 68yr old man who had Alzheimer’s so badly that he could not dress himself nor go to the toilet alone. This article is the story of how Dr Mary Newport had been treating her husband with virgin coconut oil (VCO) with incredible results. She claims it got his SHORT TERM MEMORY back and functional, and helped his DEPRESSION, and that MRI scans had showed his brain had STOPPED SHRINKING. The son of the 67 yr old also contacted Keiran Clarke, professor of physiological biochemistry at Oxford University, and head of the Cardiac Metabolism Group, who gave favorable comments on Dr. Mary’s report.

This caused him in July to start giving his father one teaspoon of coconut oil twice a day and today the old man gets dressed himself and takes a minibus to a recreation center where he spends the day and returns home, through London, by himself.

The ‘experts’ believe it is the action of the tiny molecules of energy in the coconut, called ketones’ BUT I believe there is more to it.

So, anyone with SHORT TERM MEMORY DAMAGE, ADHD, AUTISM, ALZHEIMERs, DEPRESSION, ATAXIA [head bobbing up and down], would be silly not to try this.

By the way, I had my bold tested for cholesterol before I started with the coconut oil about a year ago and it was very good. Good cholesterol high and bad cholesterol low. A year after starting the coconut oil I again took my bold and it was the same, still very good. Actually my doctor said that if I was an astronaut wanting to go to the moon, this blood test would say they should let me go.

They might be right, I suppose I could make it to the moon, but the damage from the polio to my brain and nerves can never be restored, only controlled to a degree. I will still always be fighting the polio related symptoms, but possibly with a better chance of survival than those who do not know, nor try all the natural remedies available.

This information is not only for the improvement of your own health, buy also so that you can perhaps pass it on to someone else who can use it to improve their quality of life.

A growing number of people suffer the pain and discomfort of heartburn or reflux on a regular basis. It has been estimated that up to twenty percent of the population are affected at least once a week. Acid reflux and heartburn occur when the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) allows the acid content of the stomach to flow back up into the esophagus. The esophagus is a tube like structure that connects the mouth and throat to the stomach. The LES is a valve which naturally protects the delicate esophagus from harmful acids. It is almost like a trapdoor, which opens up to allow the food we eat to enter the gut. Hydrochloric acid is then produced by the body to help break these substances down.

When heartburn or acid reflux strikes it is an indication of the LES temporarily relaxing, or in more serious cases, of it not functioning properly. If a person suffers from more regular or even constant heartburn and reflux, it may be a symptom of a far more serious condition called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease.) The symptoms of GERD are; heartburn, chest pains (especially at night), regurgitation of foods and liquids, a feeling of ‘sourness’ in the mouth and at times a sore throat and coughing and wheezing. If you suffer from any of the above symptoms on a regular basis, an appointment should be made with your doctor as soon as possible. GERD can lead to severe medical complications and should not be ignored. Pregnancy is often the cause acid indigestion. If you are pregnant, always consult your doctor or obstetrician before taking any heartburn or reflux remedy. Both antacid and herbal treatments can be harmful to an unborn child. You can try lying on your right side. This keeps the opening of the stomach upward toward the left. If however, you only experience occasional heartburn or acid reflux, there are many natural remedies which can help to ease your symptoms. These include;

  • Aloe Vera JuiceChewable DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice)
  • Marshmallow root tea
  • Peppermint tea
  • Aniseed or anise
  • Lavender
  • Digestive enzymes that contain pepsin or betain
  • Papaya digestive enzymes
  • Chicory root
  • Pineapple juice, which contains an enzyme called bromelain (bromelain can also be bought in tablet form)

Taking herbal remedies, rather than antacids, to relieve the symptoms of heartburn or reflux, can be extremely beneficial. If you take too many antacids they can sometimes cause heart palpitations. Nevertheless, herbal remedies may also have side affects, particularly if you have been prescribed pharmaceutical drugs from your regular doctor. In such cases, a reputable herbalist should always be consulted if any form of medication is being taken. Certified Herbalists can be sourced in your local business directory, or on the internet. Remedies that include herbal teas, Aloe Vera juice and digestive enzymes are usually found in health stores and are not generally thought to have many side affects. Always speak with a store assistant before you purchase a treatment. They often have a vast knowledge of herbal remedies, as well as their uses and effects. The most common causes of heartburn and reflux are the foods we eat. Food and beverages to avoid include;

  • Spicy foods
  • Citrus fruits and juices
  • Vinegar
  • Garlic
  • Fatty foods
  • Coffee
  • Carbonated drinks (sodas)
  • Tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Black peppers
  • Chillies (hot and spicy capsicums)
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Fatty foods
  • Foods high in sugar
  • Bread
  • Raw onions

There are several other foods which can cause a reaction. Some people are more sensitive than others and may even have food allergies. If you think you might have an allergy to food, the best course of action is to consult your doctor or a dietician, before you modify your diet. To achieve optimum health, eat a sensible, balanced diet and try not to consume too much food in one sitting. Meals that contain carbohydrates, meat, processed foods, sugar and fats can aggravate the causes of heartburn and reflux. Eat slowly and make sure that you chew each mouthful properly. Undigested food will often create excess acid in the stomach, producing gases that can put pressure on a weakened LES and result in a painful bout of heartburn or reflux. As with all medical conditions, treating the cause rather than the symptom is the most logical way to control the discomfort of acid reflux and heartburn.

There are many herbs to cure skin rashes and irritations, so I thought I’d take a moment to share some of my favorite skin treatments.

First, let me remind you that the best overall skin care product you can use is olive oil.  Weather you suffer from dry or itchy skin, or just wish to improve the appearance and texture of your skin, you would be hard pressed to do better than pure, extra virgin olive oil.  This can be applied straight from the bottle, and can be used on any part of the skin including the face.

The curative properties of Olive Oil, both internal and external are nothing short of miraculous and I would like to share with you a recent experience that serves as a reminder to me how some of the most common elements surrounding us often remain overlooked.

There is an After-Shower Oil that is extremely simple to prepare and is an excellent curative for virtually any skin irritation including eczema and psoriasis.

After-Shower Oil:
Please remember that while a lesser grade of olive oil can be used for everyday purposes, if you are attempting to treat a serious skin condition, the extra virgin is made from the first press of the olive and retains the most important curative properties that you are searching for.

Blend the oils together, and if desired, add several drops of your favorite essential oil for fragrance.  This can be applied to the skin at any time.  For all-over skin conditioning, apply the oil immediately after your bath or shower, then pat dry.  A special note for women who shave their legs:  This oil treatment will completely eliminate any itching or dry flaking skin after shaving.  It is simply the best after-bath oil you will ever try.

Another oil that has fantastic properties for the skin is coconut oil. This oil is solid at room temperature and is liquid at body temperature. It is good for all over. It smells wonderful and feels wonderful and it tastes good too. You could get quite hooked on using it.

Tips for Arthritis Pain Relief

An acidic body makes pain worse. A very effective remedy is to try get the system more alkaline. Baking soda (not baking powder) is a great alkalizer but it is quickly destroyed in the acidic environment of the gut. But you could put a teaspoon of baking soda in your drinking water to make ‘alkali water’ and this will slowly help to alkalize the system. Of course the acid side of your diet has to be addressed and the acid causing food removed and replaced with alkalizing food. Celery, green beans, lettuce and many more choices are alkali. Even plain pancakes are kind to acid tummies because they are made with baking soda. Not much food value in pancakes but they are calming to angry tummies. Many foods cause acid problems in the body, some of the culprits that should be avoided are soda, fake fruit juice, most pizza sauce, processed orange juice, processed meat like baloney and canned sausages. Fresh and frozen veggies and fruit are more likely to be alkaline than processed or packaged foods. Besides the diet aspect there are physical remedies that can help arthritis sufferers.

Protect your joints. Don’t keep your joints in the same position for a prolonged period of time. Balance your rest and work throughout the day. Use the strongest joints available for the job.

Stretch it. Stretching should be part of every arthritis patient’s daily routine. A good stretch helps prevent injuries by warming up muscles and tendons which are more limber and less likely to tear. Spend at least 10 minutes each day stretching, and work each major muscle group.

Cool it down. Stop physical activity. Rest in a cool/shaded environment. Spray with a mist of cool water or wrap an ice pack or cold compress in a towel and apply it to reduce arthritis pain and swelling.

Get moving. Exercise can help reduce joint pain and stiffness and increases flexibility and muscle strength. It can also help with weight control, stress management, and make you feel better overall. The Arthritis Foundation also offers water exercise and other classes.

Get a massage. Massage therapy can relieve your pain, soothe stiff sore muscles, reduce inflammation and swelling. Make sure you use oil or cream on your fingers to make it mroe gentle. Work the area for five to ten minutes a day if possible.

Keep your weight in balance. Being overweight, even just moderately, impacts weightbearing joints and can increase the pain of arthritis. Studies have indicated that losing extra weight lowers the risk for developing osteoarthritis of the knee. Losing weight can help slow the progression of arthritis too.

Get a diagnosis. If you are experiencing symptoms like pain, stiffness, swelling for more than 1 weeks, you should consider seeing your doctor and getting a diagnosis. Remember that there are more than 100 types of arthritis. It is important to get the specific diagnosis for the type of arthritis you have.

Take your medication the right way. Don’t stop taking your medication just because you feel it is not working. Check with your doctor first. You need to understand that it may take several days to several months for a medication to become effective.

Look out for new options. Recently FDA has approved some new drugs for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other arthritis diseases. If feel that the current medication doesn’t work well, check with your doctor about possible new options.

Keep educating yourself. It is important to learn something new about arthritis. Find some good websites online and subscribe to their newsletter if they have it. Join one of two active online arthritis communities like forums or bulletin board. Never hesitate to see your doctors and ask questions.
